Legislation Sponsored by Nick
The links above lead to Seattle City Council legislation I have sponsored or co-sponsored since being elected in 1998. Legislation consists of bills and ordinances (laws) and resolutions (policy statements). This legislation represents my efforts to bring to the forefront issues I believe are important to the welfare of our citizens.
These links are grouped by year. Each individual link displays the subject of the legislation it links to. After clicking on one of my legislation links, you will be directed to a City Clerk web page displaying a particular year's legislation. From there, you can also search for any other Bill/Ordinance or Resolution by clicking on the magnifying glass in the upper lefthand corner of the page.
The City Council deals with hundreds of pieces of legislation each year. Probably over 90% of it is initiated from City Departments and is of a routine nature. Most of it involves accepting outside funds for specific projects, making adjustments to various department budgets, and setting broad non-controversial policies.
Analyzing and passing this weekly flow of legislation takes up most of a City Council Member's time. This relatively smooth flow of paper work guides the City's 10,000+ employees and keeps the City functioning.
But City Council candidates are not elected to office to simply shuffle paper by rubber stamping City Departments' proposals. Each of us has a vision of how we would like to see our City grow and prosper by trying to shape the legislation that is handed to us. And when we can break away from the many routine meetings that are necessary for administrating the City, we try to initiate legislation that more forcefully reflects the vision that we articulated when we ran for office.
