Marita Dingus' mixed-media installation of recycled and reclaimed copper features three 5-foot by 3-foot African-American cherub-like figures that "swim" among patinated seaweed and vines on the west interior wall of the library addition. The artwork is inspired by an existing bas relief frieze adorning the exterior of the building and the mythical Yoruba momolokun, "children of the sea."
In November 1998, Seattle voters overwhelmingly approved the $196.4 million "Libraries for All" bond measure to upgrade The Seattle Public Library with new facilities, technology, and books. The Douglass-Truth Branch expansion was the 21st project completed under the "Libraries for All" building program.
