Inverness Cable Replacement Project

City Light Undergrounding Project

Map of Inverness neighborhood project area

Project Description

The original underground facilities in northeast Seattle’s Inverness neighborhood were installed over 40 years ago, and they are showing sign of aging. To address the frequent outages caused by this aging infrastructure, City Light will be rebuilding a roughly 15-block portion of the underground facilities in this area. Please see the map above for more information.

Location

Construction will occur in the Inverness neighborhood between 45th Ave. NE and Sand Point Way NE.

What's Happening Now?

Project Update (June 2022): This project has been completed.

Community Benefits

  • This work will result in enhanced electrical reliability and reduce the likelihood of unplanned power outages in the area.

Anticipated Impacts

  • Crews will be replacing several junction boxes, elbows, transformers, and cables that make up the underground electrical system for this area.
  • The emergency work includes about 15 blocks of residential and some commercial customers. Crews will complete this work in sections.
  • For the safety of our crews, City Light will need to conduct planned outages to perform the work. City Light will notify affected residents in advance before any outage.
  • Customers can expect parking, sidewalk, and traffic impacts along Inverness Dr. NE and nearby surrounding streets. Construction signage and traffic control flaggers will redirect pedestrians and vehicles where needed.
  • City Light will be performing this work under a noise variance permit. Some noise is expected due to heavy machinery, trucks, and other equipment.

  • Start Date: Late January 2022
  • Duration: Approximately five months
  • Work Hours: Mon.-Fri., 7 a.m.–7 p.m.
